Sky Blue Radio is honored to re-air a very special interview, originally recorded by our friends at From the Ashes Radio. This powerful conversation features Michael Durant, Retired CW4, U.S. Army helicopter pilot, whose story was featured in Black Hawk Down.
During Operation Gothic Serpent in Somalia, Durant was the pilot of helicopter Super Six Four. His aircraft was the second of two MH-60L Black Hawk helicopters shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. After being struck in the tail by an RPG, his helicopter crashed about a mile southwest of the mission’s target.
Durant and his crew—Bill Cleveland, Ray Frank, and Tommy Field—were badly injured in the crash. Durant himself suffered a crushed vertebra and a compound fracture of his left femur. Three Delta Force snipers, MSG Gary Gordon, SFC Randy Shughart, and MSG Brad Halling, had been providing suppressive fire from the air. When hostile forces closed in, Gordon and Shughart volunteered to be inserted on the ground to defend the crash site. They fought bravely to protect Durant and his crew until they were overrun and killed. Gordon and Shughart were later awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for their heroism.
This unforgettable interview with CW4 Durant will air during Hour #1 of The JT Show on September 12th, 2025 at 2300 Zulu, or 5:00 PM Mountain Time.
We are very thankful to Rob and One Shot from From the Ashes Radio for sharing this incredible interview with our listeners.
