Denver International Airport (DEN) has completed its $2.5 billion Concourse Expansion Program, adding 39 new gates to accommodate the growing number of passengers at the third-busiest airport in the U.S. This multi-phase project began in May 2018 and was managed by WSP, an engineering and consulting firm. The final phase, a 29,000-square-foot expansion on Concourse A-East, includes new gates, hold rooms, and office spaces.

A standout feature of the project is Concourse A-West’s LEED Platinum certification, recognizing its energy-efficient design. The expansion utilizes natural light and advanced heating and cooling systems to reduce energy consumption by 30%. This environmentally conscious approach aligns with DEN’s efforts to support more sustainable airport operations.

The expansion also included outdoor patios, skylights, and glass elevators for improved passenger experiences, as well as infrastructure enhancements like de-icing fill stations to support operations. These updates will enhance DEN’s ability to handle more than 100 million passengers annually, further solidifying its position as a key hub in the U.S.

The program’s success was recognized by Engineering News-Record-Mountain States in 2023 as one of the best regional projects in the airport and transit category. As DEN continues to grow, these improvements will play a crucial role in supporting both domestic and international air traffic.
