Introduction to 3D Printing and the AuthentiKit Project As Stormbirds recently pointed out, most of us look to a variety of commercial sources for flight simulation hardware: Honeycomb, Thrustmaster, Turtle Beach, and more have offered mass market options. However, increasingly, we’re seeing home simmers design and build their own controls. Do-it-yourself hardware might just be the future of flight sim controls!

Topic Overview In the first portion of the session, Phil Hulme (creator of the AuthentiKit project) will present an overview of what 3D printing is and why the latest 3D printing technologies make it so relevant for flight simulation. To help you decide if it’s right for you, this will be an honest appraisal not just of the positives but also the downsides and complications. Later, Phil will discuss AuthentiKit, and the ways in which this freeware community project seeks to maximize the exciting potential of 3D printing while minimizing the areas of friction.

Presenter Bio Phil Hulme launched the AuthentiKit project in December 2020. He is a VR-only flight simmer, having got into the hobby in 2016 when the Oculus Rift was launched. His goal is to create a flight sim experience that feels viscerally real.
