Join EAA as they pay homage to the brave heroes and profound sacrifices of the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the pivotal year of 1944 as a whole. EAA is proud to present an 80-year commemoration titled “Turning the Tide” at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024, scheduled for July 23-24.

“With the number of WWII veterans dwindling, it’s imperative to honor the legacy of 1944 and the crucial campaigns that secured our freedom,” remarked Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, overseeing AirVenture features and attractions. “This year’s lineup will weave together the human stories and aviation history of that era, providing a poignant connection for today’s generation.”

Witness a spectacular display of C-47s from the D-Day Squadron, showcasing these iconic aircraft that played a pivotal role in history. This fleet of unique C-47s hails from across the United States and will be part of a special mission to Europe in May and June 2024. These aircraft were instrumental in ferrying over 13,000 paratroopers to Utah Beach during the Normandy landings. Be captivated by afternoon air shows featuring warbirds from the Pacific and European theaters, including the renowned World War II Airborne Demonstration Team. Watch in awe as they jump from their own C-47s using traditional round canopy parachutes, echoing the bravery of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in Normandy.

The highlight of the evening on Tuesday, July 23, is the Theater in the Woods presentation, delving into the events of 1944 and the aircraft that shaped history. Split into two parts, the first segment will recount the pivotal moments of 1944, while the second part will delve into the aircraft themselves. Stay tuned for announcements regarding special guests and further details on the presentation.

Additionally, they have extended invitations to other aircraft that played significant roles in 1944, promising a diverse and immersive experience for attendees. EAA and EAA Warbirds of America are tirelessly working to curate a series of activities to ensure this commemoration leaves a lasting impact. Join all of us as we honor the courage and sacrifice of those who shaped our history.
