VATSIM Staff Member Tragically Killed in Earthquake



From VATSIM’s Africa and Middle East Region: “It is with great sadness that the VATSIM Africa & Middle East Region announces the passing of Mr. Shahin Najafi, our Regional Auditor and Operations Director. Mr. Najafi passed away as a result of the recent earthquake on the Iraq – Iran border. Mr. Najafi has been a member of VATSIM for many years, and has been instrumental in the founding of the VATSIM Iran vACC. Over the years, he lead the VATME Division before his promotion to the VATAME Regional Team.”


“Mr. Najafi was well known to many of our members as a kind and gentle human being. His loss comes as a shock to the Region and all those who knew him, and he will sorely be missed by all.

The VATSIM Africa and Middle East Region will be organizing a memorial group flight to Mr. Najafi’s hometown of Kermanshah, Iran (ICAO: OICC). More details will be released shortly.

The VATAME Region’s thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Shahin’s wife and family.”

Tonight, the VATSIM Regional Director of the Africa and Middle East, Thomas Mathieu issued a statement:

“I am deeply saddened and lost for words for the sudden loss of our dear friend, Shahin. His death has sent waves of shock and sadness throughout our region and beyond. Shahin was a well respected and very important leader of our Regional team who helped expose VATSIM and our hobby to a country where aviation is now growing and thriving. Shahin is in our thoughts and prayers as well as the nearly 500+ who perished with him. Godspeed and may Allah guide you though the paradise of eternal peace.”
